They padded along in the darkness for who knows how long. Cloverpaw was lost in thought, when she sput her paw onto something soft. She tried to pull it out, but her paw just went lower. "Quick sand!" She called to Eaglepaw.

Eaglepaw turned around, only to find Cloverpaw sinking into the ground lower and lower. "How is it that I didn't get stuck in it, but you did?" he wondered aloud. He shook his head. "Nevermind that, Larkpaw and I'll find something to pull you out with."

Larkpaw let out a hiss. "Now I'm stuck too!" she complained.

Cloverpaw rolled her eyes. "Because you repel trouble when I attract it." She muttered to herself. She looked around for something to hold onto.

Eaglepaw raced off. He could only go up the mountain, since the way back down was blocked by the struggling Cloverpaw and Larkpaw.

Cloverpaw saw a low branch hanging from a tree near Larkpaw. "Larkpaw!" She called. "Look to your right!" She stared at the twig. It was small and looked weak, but sturdy.

Larkpaw looked over to her left first in the confusion. "Oh, right!" she meowed. A branch... She tried to grab it, careful not to struggle because she knew the dangers of doing that.

Cloverpaw did not know the dangers. She tried to move closer to Larkpaw, sinking her lower. She sheathed her claws, holding her firm to the ground.

Larkpaw hissed at Cloverpaw. "Don't you dare move! You'll just sink lower!"

All of the sudden Eaglepaw returned, a very thick, and strong looking vine clenched between his jaws.

Cloverpaw ignored Larkpaw's sharp tone, but stayed perfectly still. She saw Eaglepaw come down from the corner of her eye.

"Here, grab this!" Eaglepaw panted as he threw the vine to Cloverpaw.

Cloverpaw clenched the vine between her teeth. Pulling hard, she felt her paw slowly rising from the surface.

Cloverpaw's paw finally broke free of the sand. "Larkpaw!" She looked over at the other cat, who was still attempting to grab the branch.

Once Eaglepaw was finished with Cloverpaw, he moved onto his sister. "Grab this!" he yowled, tossing her the vine.

Cloverpaw wanted to help, but was afraid that she would hurt Larkpaw if she did. She wouldn't let me near her, mind. She thought to herself. She positively detests me.

Larkpaw, grateful, for once, grabbed onto the vine, and was pulled to safety.

Cloverpaw closed her eyes and sighed in relief. "Now, I will be careful were I step." She said. "Let's keep going."

Eaglepaw nodded. "Yes..." he mewed. With a sigh the black tomcat sniffed the air, searching for a way out of this horrible nightmare.
